About the committee
An autonomous system is acting across digital infrastructure without a confirmed human operator. Delegates hold individual portfolios and must investigate JANUS while the crisis changes around them.
The room ends with the JANUS Accord, followed by a final system audit.
How the crisis runs
Black Mirror runs in real time. A crisis director introduces updates as the conference goes: new intelligence, new JANUS behaviour, leaked communications and incidents the committee has to answer.
Every delegate holds an individual portfolio, a named real-world figure whose expertise, institution and public record decide what they can plausibly know, want and do. Portfolios include heads of state and international officials alongside researchers, executives and an anonymous technical authority.
The room acts through:
- Directives, communiqués and portfolio powers, for the crisis as it moves
- A slower resolution process running alongside, towards the JANUS Accord
Keep three questions separate: attribution (who built or controls JANUS), containment (what can limit it now) and governance (what rules should exist afterwards). The strongest delegates never mix them up.
What it has to settle
- Who can contain JANUS, and what evidence gives them that authority?
- How should responsibility be assigned when an autonomous system causes harm?
- Which limits, oversight systems and failure protocols should survive the crisis?
