Study guides, rules of procedure and everything else to read before you arrive.

How to prepare

First conference? Start at the top. Been before? Start at step three.

  1. Read the starter pack

Four short documents: how to prepare, the flow of debate, points and motions, and the two-topic approach. Under an hour, all four.

  2. Then your own committee’s papers

Every committee has a study guide and most have their own rules. The crisis rooms, the treaty conference and the summit each work differently.

  3. Research your assignment before the agenda

Everyone has the study guide. Only you have your country: what it wants, what it has said in public, and what it will walk away from.

  4. Write sixty to ninety seconds

Who you are, what you want, what you’re offering. Expect to give it early, while the blocs are still forming.

  5. Come ready to be edited

People who disagree with you will rewrite whatever you draft first. Plan for it.
